Shape transients to help an element cut through

I learned about this singing polyphonic stuff in choir: if the listener just hears the entrance, they then know a new part is there.

As Dave Pensado says, “Once your ear latches onto the transient, it can then kinda figure out the rest of the sound that follows.”¹
