Play is creative fuel

Adults with playful traits are more creative and motivated. They frame everyday activities in a way that can be entertaining and intellectually stimulating.1 Creativity is not all output—it’s input too.

Video games can be useful for getting into a state of flow.1 They can improve brain function. Just be careful not to develop an addiction.2

Bumblebees play. In one study, researchers found the bees preferred to roll around with beads. They may do so to hone their motor skills.3 Play helps us develop our skills for surviving and thriving, but play is unique to other behaviors because it’s its own reward.4 Play is letting go of control.
